Luwuk to Banggai: How to Get to the Sulawesi Archipelago in 2026
Makassar → Palu → Luwuk → boat. The reality.
Banggai’s transit is among the most demanding in Indonesian dive tourism. Here’s what to plan for. (See Banggai cardinalfish for context.)

Banggai is roughly 1,200 km east of Bali by air. Direct international flights don’t exist; you transit through one of three Sulawesi airports — Makassar (UPG), Palu (PLW), or Manado (MDC). From there, fly to Luwuk (LUW), the small port town that’s the gateway.
Flight options to Luwuk
| From | Carrier | Frequency | Avg fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Makassar (UPG) | Wings, Citilink | 2-3 daily | $80-$140 |
| Palu (PLW) | Wings | 1 daily | $60-$110 |
| Manado (MDC) | Wings (transit Palu) | 1-2 daily | $110-$180 |
| Bali (DPS) | via Makassar | — | $200-$300 |
Luwuk port to Banggai
Luwuk has two boat options to Banggai:
Public ferry (10-12 hours). Departs Luwuk port 18:00, arrives Banggai harbor 06:00 next morning. Sleeper cabin available ($25), basic seats ($8). Slow, cheap, real local experience. Not recommended for divers with luggage.
Private speedboat charter (3 hours). $400-$600 per group of 4-6 (typical). Departs morning at your time, lunch on board, arrives Banggai by 14:00. Our packages include this charter.
Total transit time
From Singapore: ~22 hours (SIN→DPS→UPG→LUW→speedboat). Most travelers split this with overnight Makassar.
From Europe: 2 days door-to-door. Plan a buffer day in Makassar.
Returning
Most Banggai trips end mid-day, allowing same-day flights from Luwuk back to Makassar. Late afternoon Luwuk flights to UPG are usually safer than morning ones (less weather risk).
We arrange all transit
Our packages include speedboat charter Luwuk↔boat and Luwuk airport pickup. You arrive, we take it from there.
